Guardianship
- What is a guardianship?
A guardianship of the person is where the court appoints an adult person (not the parent) to have custody, make decisions and care for a minor child. - What do I need to do to start the process to file for guardianship?
Before starting the process, you will need to acquire a copy of the minor child’s birth certificate. Certain relatives or the minor can obtain a copy at the Recorder’s Office in the county where the minor was born. A copy of the birth certificate will need to be filed with the court to have a guardianship granted. - Where do I get the forms for filing a guardianship case?
- The court’s website.
- You can also contact the Self-Help Legal Access Center to obtain the forms. Please send an email to SHLAC.Workshop@ventura.courts.ca.gov.
